Our NICU team is trained to manage a wide range of newborn health conditions — from the most common to the most complex.

Breathing Problems
Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) — most common in premature babies whose lungs are not fully ready
Premature Birth
Babies born before 37 weeks needing warmth, breathing support, feeding help and close monitoring
Low Birth Weight
Babies weighing under 2.5 kg who need extra nutrition, warmth and monitoring to grow stronger
Jaundice
Yellow colouring of the skin and eyes in newborns — treated with phototherapy (special light therapy)
Heart Problems
Congenital heart defects detected at birth — assessed with neonatal echocardiography and managed by specialists
Newborn Infections
Sepsis, meningitis or infections passed from mother to baby — treated quickly with antibiotics and IV fluids
Brain Injury (HIE)
Hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy — oxygen shortage to the brain at birth managed with therapeutic brain cooling
Blood Sugar Problems
Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) in newborns of diabetic mothers or small babies — managed with IV glucose
Feeding Difficulties
Premature babies who cannot yet feed by mouth receive nutrition through a tube or IV until strong enough
Genetic Conditions
Chromosomal or metabolic disorders detected at birth — assessed and managed with specialist input and genetic testing
Surgical Newborns
Babies needing surgery after birth — our NICU provides pre- and post-operative intensive care with full monitoring
Temperature Control

Common Questions

Questions Parents Often Ask

We know the NICU can feel scary and overwhelming. Here are honest, simple answers to the most common questions we hear from parents.

Yes — parents are always welcome in our NICU. We encourage you to spend as much time as possible with your baby. Kangaroo Mother Care (skin-to-skin holding) is actively supported as it helps babies grow, stay warm, and recover faster. You will be included in daily doctor rounds so you always know exactly how your baby is doing.
The length of stay depends on your baby's condition. A slightly premature baby (34–36 weeks) might only need a few days. A very premature baby born at 28 weeks may need several weeks or months. Your baby's doctor will give you a more accurate estimate as your baby's progress becomes clearer — and the team will update you regularly.
Yes, and we strongly encourage it. Breast milk is especially important for NICU babies as it protects against infections and helps their gut and brain develop. If your baby is too small or weak to feed directly, we will help you express milk which is given through a feeding tube. Our lactation support nurses will guide and support you throughout.
A neonatologist is a doctor who specialises only in the care of newborn babies — especially sick or premature ones. They have completed several years of additional training beyond a regular paediatric degree. Our neonatologist is in the NICU 24 hours a day alongside a team of NICU-trained nurses, feeding specialists, and physiotherapists who all work together for your baby.
Before discharge, we make sure your baby can breathe on their own, maintain their body temperature, feed well (by breast or bottle), and is gaining weight consistently. We will teach you everything you need to know about caring for your baby at home — feeding, signs to watch for, and when to call us. A follow-up appointment is always arranged before you leave.
Yes. We have a dedicated transport incubator available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for safely transferring critically ill newborns from other hospitals to our Level III NICU. The transport incubator maintains warmth, oxygen supply, and monitoring during the journey so your baby receives continuous care from the moment of transfer.
