What It Means

What is a High-Risk Pregnancy?

A high-risk pregnancy simply means that you or your baby may need extra care. It does not mean something will definitely go wrong. About 1 in 12 pregnancies is considered high-risk.

High-risk does not mean danger — it means your doctor needs to watch you more carefully. With good care, most high-risk pregnancies result in healthy mothers and healthy babies.

At Desai Hospital, Dr. Parimala Desai and her team have 25+ years of experience managing complex pregnancies. They will create a personalised plan for you and check on you more often to make sure everything stays on track.

  • More frequent scans and check-ups to keep mother and baby safe
  • Personalised care plan based on your specific condition
  • Level-III NICU on-site — your baby gets care immediately if needed
  • 24/7 emergency obstetric team — always ready for you

Your Care Journey

How We Take Care of You & Your Baby

From your first visit to going home with your baby — here is exactly what we do for high-risk pregnancies.

1
First Visit & Assessment
We go through your full medical history, past pregnancies, and current health. We then create a care plan made just for you.
2
More Frequent Scans & Tests
Instead of one scan a month, you come more often. We check your baby's growth, blood flow, and your blood pressure at every visit.
3
Medicines & Treatment If Needed
We give medicines to control blood pressure, blood sugar, or other conditions — all carefully chosen to be safe for your baby.
4
Planned, Safe Delivery
We plan the safest way for you to give birth — normal delivery or C-section — with the full team ready and NICU on standby if needed.
5
Postnatal Follow-Up
After birth, we continue to monitor you and your baby. Blood pressure, healing, breastfeeding support, and emotional care — all included.

Common Questions

Questions Mothers Ask Us Most

Simple, honest answers before your first visit.

No — not at all. High-risk only means your pregnancy needs closer attention. The vast majority of high-risk pregnancies result in healthy mothers and healthy babies. With modern medicine and experienced care, outcomes are very good. Our job is to spot any problem early and act quickly — so you and your baby stay safe.

More often than a normal pregnancy — usually every 1 to 2 weeks, and weekly or more in the third trimester. The exact schedule depends on your condition. Some mothers may need a short hospital stay for monitoring at certain points. Your personal care plan will clearly explain your visit schedule.

Many high-risk mothers do have normal deliveries. The method of delivery depends on your specific condition, the position of your baby, and the position of your placenta. As your due date gets closer, Dr. Parimala Desai will discuss the safest delivery option with you. We respect your wishes while always keeping safety first.

Not always, but a previous complicated pregnancy does increase the chance. For example, if you had preeclampsia before, you are more likely to have it again. We strongly recommend coming to us before you get pregnant so we can review your history, optimise your health, and start monitoring from the very beginning of your next pregnancy.

This depends entirely on your condition. For high blood pressure, we give blood pressure medicines that are safe in pregnancy. For diabetes, we may use insulin. Some mothers need blood thinners, progesterone, or thyroid medicines. All medications are carefully chosen to treat your condition while keeping your baby safe. We explain every medicine before prescribing it.

Yes — Desai Hospital has a Level-III NICU on-site. If your baby is born early or needs special care after delivery, they are treated right here — no stressful transfer to another hospital. Our neonatologist is present at all high-risk deliveries, with full resuscitation and intensive care equipment always ready.
